Your Introduction is Key

Your Introduction is Key!

You’re ready to step on the stage in the front of the room and begin your presentation. You may be the last speaker of the day, and the audience is tired. You take a few breaths as your introduction is being read.

Don’t underestimate the importance of a good introduction. A great introduction will excite the audience and cause them to look forward to your talk. While you need to show credibility in your introduction, there are ways to do this without your intro reading like a resume or laundry list of all your accomplishments.

Here is a quick example. Denise Galloni is the owner of DG Training Solutions Inc. and has been in business for four years. She has delivered over 500 career presentations and is the creator, producer and host of a TV show called Empowering Women. Okay, while this intro does give me credibility, is it really that exciting? Will the audience be excited to hear what I have to say as soon as I walk out on the stage?

Let’s use the same biographical information and add to it and make it memorable while still providing credibility.

Voted the quietest girl in her senior class, Denise never had much to say. Today she will tell us how she went from that young quiet girl to starting her own business four years ago called DG Training Solutions Inc. She is the creator, producer and host of a monthly TV show called Empowering Women and has delivered over 500 career presentations.

Basically, both intros have the same information. Which one sounds more intriguing to you? Did I have the same credibility in both? Which one make you want to hear what I have to say?

Tailor your introduction to the audience you are speaking to. Always give the person introducing you your typed introduction. Ask your introducer to read it as written because you will refer to it in your presentation. You can even add some details about your presentation or questions for the audience.

These tips will have the audience anticipating your presentation before you even open your mouth.

Until the next blog, Keep Speaking!

Thinking Outside the Box

Sitting down reflecting on my goals I had in the beginning of 2017 and how far I have progressed made me take a few moments and wonder what could I have done differently. Some of my goals I have met, some are on pace to be met by the end of the year, and some fell short. Was I too ambitious in setting some of these goals? Did I try hard enough? What could I have done differently?

In keeping some of the goals for 2018 and planning to crush them next year, I knew it was time to think outside the box. I am moving forward but not at the rate I would like to see my business grow. I’m excited to think outside the box and look at things in a new way. Sometimes you just need to step back as an observer and watch what you are doing. Don’t we all have great advice for everyone else? It is time to give yourself that great advice.

One of my goals for 2017 was to blog consistently every month. I have had this blog, Denise Speaks, since 2014 and until this year the blog posts were sporadic. This blog is my eleventh for the year. Goal accomplished! But I must tell you this is the last blog that I am writing. Beginning next month, I will do a video blog or a vlog in its place. My company focuses on communication and speaking, and video taping my vlog is the next logical step.

I am also incorporating some out of the box ideas starting in 2018 for my business. Stay tuned to see what I do!

What part of your business or career do you need to refocus on for 2018 and think outside the box? If you don’t have any idea, step back and observe what you are doing or ask someone who you respect their business expertise to help. 2018 is fast approaching, what a great time to try to be creative and think outside the box to help build your business or get your career moving in the right direction.

Until the next blog or soon to be vlog, Keep Speaking!

Just Do IT!

Did you just picture a Nike commercial when you read the title of this month’s blog? Did you ask yourself “do what”?

What is "IT"? Although this sounds like a jeopardy question, it can be a question that may change your life. And only you know what “IT” is.

In December, I was honored to be interviewed about my business on a television show for a community cable channel. While the camera man was setting up the lights and camera, I couldn’t help but think how cool this would be to do this all the time. “Who can I talk to about getting my own TV show?” I asked the question before I had a chance to think about the possible responses. It turned out that the camera man was the same person who creates the shows for the station. “Me, what type of show do you want to do?” he asked.

I could have said I would get back to him when I had an idea, but this was my chance.  Just Do IT! I told him I wanted my own interview show, but was unclear in what direction I wanted my show to go. He told me to get back to him with a proposal. I had to submit a proposal, including the name and logo.  Six months later my show Empowering Women aired.

A year ago, I would have never imagined that I would be hosting as well as producing a TV show. In the moment, I jumped in without looking back. It paid off, as of this blog, I have been the host and producer of four episodes so far. The feedback has all been positive!

What are you holding back on? Sometimes you need to Just Do IT and see what happens. “What if I fail?” You may ask yourself this question. What if you don’t fail? What if you never Do IT and always wonder what could or would have been. “Just Do IT”. You may be surprised at the outcome.

Until the next blog, Keep Speaking!

What are you telling yourself?

I recently started to read Napoleon Hill’s book “Think and Grow Rich” which was written in 1937. I have had this book for a few years and never read it. When I saw a local mastermind group forming dedicated to Think and Grow Rich, I knew it was a sign for me to join the group and finally read the book.

While only a few chapters into the book, one chapter resonated with me…autosuggestion. If you have never heard of this term, think of the law of attraction. Positive thoughts cause possible outcomes. Your autosuggestion will go into your subconscious mind and you will become what you believe you are.

Wow, how many times in the past did I think to myself, “I am not ready to give this presentation”, “I did not study enough and will not do well on this test”, and my favorite…”I will never get my bills paid off”?

Why do we put these negative thoughts into our minds? As a woman, I think it is easier for us to think we don’t deserve success or we are not good enough. Why are we defeating ourselves every day?

The next time you have a negative thought about yourself, your business, or your ability…stop yourself. Focus on autosuggestion by telling yourself you will be successful or will do a great job or will get out of debt.

Start today. Instead of being upset because you only crossed off half of your to do list, be happy you got 50% of your list done. Focus on the positives and you will notice your outlook will not be the only thing to improve!

Until the next blog, Keep Speaking!

Expand Your Comfort Zone

Are you one of those people who go to the same restaurant and order the same food every time?  Most of us do this, at least occasionally.  It’s comfortable, easy and we don’t have to think because we know we like this item.  I’m guilty of doing this myself.  If my husband and I are going out to eat I know what I am going to order before we even get there.

Almost two years ago I stepped out of my comfort zone.  I quit my full time job making a very good salary without another job.  While deciding where to apply for another position, I stepped out of my comfort zone further and started my own company.  For years I have wanted to start my own business.  I went from wanting to own a consignment store, to wanting to own a specialty gift basket store, and the list went on and on.  Now was my time to do it!

I just want to mention I took baby steps when I stepped out of my comfort zone.  I wasn’t ready for a giant leap yet.  I started a company doing basically the same thing I have done for years.  But now I would be my own boss of my own company.  I wasn’t sure if I was sick in my stomach from the excitement or fear.  But a year and a half later, I am still in business and doing well.

What’s next?  Since I have expanded my comfort zone, I want to step out a little further and push myself a little more.  I am taking my business in a different direction and adding different ways to generate revenue to my company. Again, it is scary but I can do it.

Are you comfortable in what you are doing or are you happy doing what you do? There is a difference.  Once I sat and listened to someone complain about how much he hated his job.  "Look for something else" I told him. “What do you want to do” I asked?  "I can do a lot of things" he replied.  "But what do you want to do" I kept asking.  He didn’t have an answer.

I’m not advocating quitting your job without something else lined up or having another income source.  But while you are deciding what you want to do, take baby steps to get there.  If you want to start your own business in a few years, you may want to do market research or take a class on starting a business.  If you want to do something different, try learning some new skills.  Before you know it you will wonder why you were so intimidated to step out of your comfort zone.

Abraham Lincoln once said “I will study and prepare myself and someday my chance will come".  This is great advice, be ready for when your chance comes.

What baby steps will you take today?

Going Back To Basics - Brainstorming

When I was getting ready to write my bi-weekly blog, I realized I could not think of a topic this time.  Normally I have a few ideas and I can sit down and write something fairly easily.

I ended up going back to basics and using a time proven technique for me...brainstorming.  During my first college writing class, the professor told my class how to break through writer's block by brainstorming ideas.  Just take out a piece of paper and jot down any idea that comes to your mind.  Do not pay attention to how crazy it might sound to you or if it fits the criteria of what you are trying to accomplish.  I have used this process many times over the years especially if I was trying to come up with a speech topic.

With my tablet (actual paper not an electronic device, I said I was going back to basics) and pen in hand I sat down and started scribbling ideas for my next blog.  I started with professional ideas such as coaching, leadership and your personal brand.  I kept going and let my brain loose to go where it wanted to go.  I started writing students going back to college, going out to eat and ordering the same thing every time, crazy videos people post on FaceBook and even meeting from the original television series, Batman, Robin and Catwoman at Steel City Con in Pittsburgh.

If you need to come up with topics or ideas and have a mental block, try this old technique.  Go back to basics and try to brainstorm, you will be surprised what you can come up with once you let your creativity loose.  I came up with the idea of writing a brainstorming blog during this process.

What process do you use when you have writer's block and need to come up with an idea?

You may be wondering what did I do with my list of crazy thoughts while brainstorming?  The funny thing is now I have four or five new ideas for future blogs outlined just from this activity.  Even the ideas that seemed useless, crazy or unlikely in a professional blog will make an excellent addition to future blogs.  Even Batman & Robin, don't believe me...stay tuned to the same blog channel, the same blog...well you know the rest!

Until the next blog, Keep Speaking!
